Writing Workshop: Getting a "Yes" from the Reviewers

The focus of this workshop is presenting your research in a manner that tells a story so that a conference or journal reviewer will understand the value of your work. This exercise will have multiple consequences:

  • YOU will better understand the value of your work.
  • It will become easier to WRITE a paper, reducing the amount of work you need to do.
  • The probability of your paper being accepted will go up.
  • The time to your graduation/promotion will shorten!!!

Most of the afternoon will be hands-on writing exercises, evaluating the work of well-respected authors, your fellow students, and yourself. I will lead a short discussion of the Levin & Redell criteria for research papers. This will NOT be an English grammar workshop, although the day will be in English.

Reading materials will be provided. Please bring with you:

  • Writing implements of two or more colors, e.g. a four-color pen or a pen and highlighter
  • OPTIONAL: If you have a paper (or thesis) you are working on, bring a printed copy
  • OPTIONAL: Laptop. There will be short writing exercises conducted on paper, but you may wish to bring your laptop to take notes.
